The History of the Lake
Fourteen thousand acres, 121 miles of shoreline, and a depth of 113 feet — a kettle lake carved by the retreating Wisconsin Glacier and long sacred to the Mdewakanton Dakota. After the railroad reached Wayzata in 1867, Lake Minnetonka became a world-renowned resort destination, home to grand hotels like the Hotel Lafayette and steamboats like the Belle of Minnetonka. By the early 1900s, flour-milling moguls built the lakeshore estates that still shape its character today.
